The self-directed approach to French

Who should French learners trust?

Anglophones settling down in France often think they will either wing it with their school French, or just learn French as they go. But things often prove a little more complicated than they thought.

When one sets off to learn French, the only question that really matters is, who is one willing to trust? Most learners end up trusting a teacher, or sometimes an app that plays the role of a teacher. That’s the logical choice, since most people do not know how they could learn a language otherwise? But academic research and empirical evidence alike have proven this to be a mistaken choice in the 21st century.

People learning French should trust themselves first and foremost. Learning French by oneself (with one's family or a small group of friends), but without a teacher actually works better, generates better results, improved speaking fluency and way more fun. How does it work in a nutshell? One needs to let go of the academic approach learnt at school and immerse oneself joyfully into digital content instead (songspodcastsTV seriesmagazinesYouTube, etc.).

Why ? Our book about this issue, “What are you Watching Tonight?” provides both theoretical and practical answers to this question. It focuses primarily on the English language but works just as well for native English speakers learning French, since the French language has plenty of excellent internet-based resources. Just replace the word "English" with the word "French" each time you see it.
